A public meeting to try to tackle the long-standing problem of traffic congestion around Alnmouth Station is being held next month.

Drivers that cannot find a space at the site’s two car parks have long left their vehicles in neighbouring streets such as Curly Lane and South View, to the frustration of locals and other road users.

Earlier this year, in a bid to resolve the issue, Northumberland County Council consulted on potential permit parking for residents and no-waiting restrictions.

However, the poll revealed divided views, with an almost 50/50 split on both options.

It showed that 31 were for residents’ parking and 29 were against, while 31 were in favour of a no-waiting restriction and 27 were against.

As a result, the county council has decided to hold a public meeting on Wednesday, September 17, at Alnmouth and Lesbury Cricket Club, to thrash out the issue. The meeting will start at 6pm.

A spokesman for the authority said: “This public meeting is to discuss parking issues and it is open to everyone.

“All of those people who are interested are welcome to attend.”

Ward member Coun Heather Cairns backed the meeting. She said: “I am pleased that we have not dropped this issue. It is democracy in action and I hope we can get something out of this.

“Anyone who thinks they can in anyway help to alleviate this issue is very welcome to attend.”
