An Alnwick pub has won a national award for its comedy sign.

Landlords of The Alnwick Arms on Clayport Street, decided to put a funny display-board outside to raise a smile from visitors and locals.

Originally intended to stay up for a week, the ‘Husband Day Care Centre’sign proved such a hit that they decided to keep it up indefinitely.

Manager Geoff Dade said he is delighted by the response to his sign, and often sees people havingtheir photos taken with it.

So it should have come as no surprise that they were nomintated in an industry-led competition to find the best pub sign, as part of the ‘It’s better down the pub’ campaign.

Although there were entries from around the country, the Arms was judged the best, and won £100 of vouchers to be used in Stonegate Group pubs.

○ Old signs have also been uncovered at the front of the town’s Black Swan pub.

Joint owner Amar Roopra is unsure if they are the original ones and is keen to find out more about them.

He is also looking for somebody who could help restore them.
