Providing vital skills in the hunt for jobs

A volunteer is developing an initiative aimed at those searching for jobs in a tough economic climate.

Recent community research indicated that unemployment was the principal social concern for Alnwick residents.

While there is plenty of help available from the Jobcentre and its supporting agencies and partners, there is never enough to address the scale of the issue, according to Ian Buchanan, who is behind Skills Plus.

He proposes offering training in skills and competencies to school leavers who are not planning to continue in further education and mature adults who have recently been made unemployed to equip them to effectively sell themselves at job interview, ideally alongside work placements.
