Prime Minister challenged to show commitment to retaining Union by dualling the A1
At Prime Minister’s Questions today, Sir Alan Beith MP challenged the Prime Minister to demonstrate commitment to keeping the union with Scotland by dualling the A1.
Sir Alan Beith, who has campaigned for the A1 in Northumberland to be upgraded to dual carriageway, said: “If the Prime Minister wants to send a clear signal that the future of Scotland and England is better together, shouldn’t he make sure that the principle road connecting the two countries, the A1, is a dual carriageway?”
Speaking after the debate, Sir Alan added: “I hope the Prime Minister will recognise the symbolic importance of the A1 as well as the economic, safety and public service reasons for upgrading the road.
“I am continuing to put pressure on Ministers at the Department of Transport and at the Treasury to prioritise the schemes for the Mousen Bends and the Morpeth to Felton stretch, which have already been subject to a great deal of preparatory work.”
