Prepare for a 2013 march
For 2013, the beneficiary of this year’s Jam Jar Army march is once again going to be opened up for a vote to let our readers decide.
But first, we need a shortlist of charities, organisations and good causes, which are either north Northumberland-based or which do specific work in north Northumberland.
Once we have a selection, we will publish the details and open up the decision to the public.
After all, the success of the Jam Jar Army campaign, now in its third year, depends on the support of the community.
In 2011, after author Judith O’Reilly came to the Gazette with the idea, more than £13,000 was raised for HospiceCare North Northumberland.
Last year, we put it to the vote for the first time and Alnwick Playhouse Youth Theatre was the runaway winner.
This success in the vote was backed up by more success in the fund-raising with the £10,000 target being passed well before the end of the year and the final tally pushing past the £12,000 mark.
So now it’s time for another good cause, looking for the support and goodwill of the generous north Northumberland public, to take its turn in the Army and hopefully to make it to three met targets in a row for the campaign.
In just 19 months since May 2011, more than £25,000 has already been raised.
Gazette editor Paul Larkin said: “The Jam Jar Army has had great success in its first two campaigns, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the generosity of those that support it in our community.
“It is a great advert for north Northumberland that even in these times of financial hardship, residents, businesses and others find the time and money to support local causes.
“I would encourage as many different groups as possible to put themselves forward for the 2013 campaign so our readers have a wide selection of causes to choose from this year.”
The Jam Jar Army has a website – www.jamjararmy.co.uk, a Twitter account @jamjararmy and you can follow all of the latest news in the Gazette.
