Speaking after the election, coun Bridgett said: "I am euphoric. I can't believe it, I didn't think I would win.

"I want to thank the electorate. They have done their bit so now it's time for me to do my bit."

And coun Bridgett has vowed to fight his ward's corner in what ever way he can.

He added: "I am going to do all the things I promised on my fliers. That will set the agenda for my first few years."

Sue Bolam, who collected 43.8 per cent of the vote, simply said: "I am disappointed and surprised. Obviously I didn't do enough."

North Northumberland Liberal Democrat MP Alan Beith applauded the outcome. He said: "Steven Bridgett's result was a remarkable success for a remarkable young man."

The Rothbury division was one of the highest polling areas in the area with a turn out of 54.8 per cent.

In total, there were 2,168 cast.
