Police appeal after suspected arson at Northumberland house

Police are appealing for information after a suspected arson at a Northumberland house, while two people were inside the property.

Just after 2am today, police received a report that a house was on fire on Newbiggin Road in Ashington. Emergency services attended and police assisted Northumberland and Fire and Rescue Service who were able to extinguish the flames. Two people were in the house at the time of the fire but were able to escape uninjured. They were taken to hospital by paramedics to be treated for smoke inhalation. Police and firefighters have been investigating the fire and it is now being treated as a suspected arson. This is believed to be an isolated incident but extra officers are in the area to carry out inquiries and reassure any concerned members of the public. Officers are appealing to anyone who saw anything in the area in the early hours of this morning, or anyone who has any information about the fire, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 192 23/07/16.
