An Alnwick petrol station is set to close following a sell-off of cheap petrol, the Gazette understands.
Alnwick Motorway Services at Cawledge, which opened in June ending the monopoly in the town of the Co-op-run Willowtree Services, was this morning selling unleaded for £1 per litre, more than 30p cheaper than other forecourts in the area.
The filling station now has no fuel left and it is understood that the site is to start being closed down this afternoon.
The station had been beset by a lack of fuel in recent weeks with Paul Abbott, of Northumberland Fuel Services Ltd, saying that the station was ‘going through a transitional period’.
Last week, it was reported that staff had been made redundant, but since then repeated calls to Mr Abbott from the Gazette have gone unanswered.
