A pensioner has complained that while low-floor access will be extended to some bus routes, other locations are rendered off-limits.

Last week, the Gazette reportedon Arriva’s Low Floor Guarantee, which ensures that buses are accessible and will come into force on the X18 from Tuesday, March 5, followedby the 20/X20 service.

But Alnwick resident Joan Rasmussen said that she really struggles to get onto the X15, which is coach-operated and will not be included in the Low Floor Guarantee.

The 80-year-old said: “If you are unable to get onto the coach, how do you get to Shilbottle or Felton?

“I don’t know what they can do.

“The steps are so high that I literally can’t get up onto them.

“I can generally climb off it but I can’t get up onto the steps.”

“Now if I want to go to Shilbottle or Felton, I’m stuck.”

She added that other passengers she had spoken to also experienced similar issues on the service.

Nick Knox, area managing director for Arriva North East, said: “Service X15 is operated using coaches, this is due to the fact that this service travels long distances and the coaches are suited to this journey in terms of comfort and reliability.”
