A 73-year-old man has been contacted by the police after being accused of harassing the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.

Michael NcNamara, of Wooden Gate Cottages, near to Lesbury, received a police information notice alleging that he sent Valentine’s cards addressed to ‘low-life scumbag’ and ‘liar, cheat, scumbag’.

The notice, which is issued for crime prevention, states that the comments in the cards were derogatory and have left the Duke and Duchess upset and harassed.

Mr McNamara told the Gazette that he had sent them, but added that he did not regret it and it wasn’t the first time he had done it. He claimed his actions had been sparked because of a dispute over water on his premises.

A police information notice is not a court order or criminal record, but police keep a record in case of future investigations. Repeat behaviour could lead to arrest and prosecution.
