Pedal power brings in nursery cash

THREE cyclists completed a coast-to-coast cycle ride, raising much-needed funds for a Seahouses nursery.
Craig Berry, with his friends Neil Souter and Malcolm Lewis, cycled 145 miles from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Seahouses.
The three were raising funds for Busy Bees nursery, which is based on the site of Seahouses First School and needs essential roof repairs.
The ride was the idea of Craig’s dad Alan, who works as a caretaker at Seahouses First School and lives in Beadnell.
Craig said: “It was tough but we did it, and we enjoyed it in a sick kind of way.
“It was hot, we were chuffed to bits when we started off but not so much later on. It was red-hot so it was hard.
“In pedalling time, it took eight hours 15 minutes and we had an average speed of 17.3 miles-per-hour which is all right considering how hilly it was.
“It was all for a good cause and we had a huge welcoming committee when we got back to Seahouses, all the kids, parents and staff were there.
“I think we were starting to well up, we were feeling a bit tired and emotional by then.”
He said that the total raised online was £600 which was to be topped up with another £200 or so in pledges from friends and family members.
Busy Bees was extremely grateful to Craig and his friends as well as to Craig’s dad Alan who had also acted as road support on the day.
With the sponsorship from the cycle ride and their own fund-raising efforts they are on the way to the £3,500 needed for the repairs.
