A north Northumberland road will remain closed for at least the rest of today after a tanker overturned in the early hours of this morning.

The vehicle carrying aviation fuel, rolled on to its side on the A696 between Kirkwhelpington and the B6342 at around 3.30am.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service was called and a multi-agency clen-up operation is under way with Northumberland County Council highways officers, Northumbria Police and Environment Agency Officers.

Diversions have been put in place.

A pump to remove the fuel from the tanker was due to arrive this morning and the road is expected to be closed all day.
