Options to solve bus-cut decision being examined

Crunch talks have been held in a desperate bid to replace a crucial bus service which was axed earlier this month.

A number of options are being thrashed out following Arriva’s decision to cut the 20/X20 from Amble’s Links Estate.

And one proposal put forward is for the town council to subsidise a bus on an experimental basis.

Although Coun Robert Arckless stressed to members of the council at Thursday’s meeting that nothing was set in stone.

He said: “Some proposals have been put to Ian Coe (Northumberland County Council’s transport support manager) and he acknowledges there is a problem and he is trying to find a positive solution.

“He said he would examine a re-route of the service. Even if it doesn’t go right into the estate, it may be possible to use the Percy Drive link. But there are no guarantees.

“Another option may include some element of subsidy from the town council with the town council having a share of the revenue.

“A lot of work needs to be done and the detail would need to be considered and it would have to be properly tendered.

“We wouldn’t be the only town council to do this. Newbiggin did something very similar with an estate bus there and that has been running fairly successfully for two years.”
