The Fire Brigades Union has announced that it plans to take further strike action over the bank holiday weekend.

The strikes will take place on Friday, from noon until 5pm; Saturday, from 2pm until 2am on Sunday; and Sunday, from 10am to 3pm.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service has robust plans in place to provide a service during this latest period of strike action – although this will not be business as usual.

The service has written to businesses in the county to help them to minimise the risk from fire, as well as urging residents to take steps to protect themselves and their homes from the risks of fire and other emergencies.

Alex Bennett, chief fire officer for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We have a duty to ensure we have robust plans in place to provide a fire and rescue response during industrial action and we will be putting these plans into action.

“We must stress that it will not be business as usual, however, and homes and businesses should take extra precautions. We are urging people to take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from the risks of fire, including ensuring they have working smoke alarms fitted in their homes. We have contacted businesses and other premises to assist them in further minimising the risk from fire and other emergencies.”
