North Northumberland’s Weightman through to Olympic semi-final

Lesbury’s Laura Weightman has made it through to the Olympic semi-finals in the 1500m after finishing sixth in her heat this morning.

Running in the third heat, the 21-year-old clocked a time of 4mins 7.29secs.

Speaking to the BBC after the race, Weightman said: “I’m really pleased to get in the top six.

“It was a tough race and the pace felt faster than it was.

“The crowd was unbelievable, it was amazing. When my name got announced, it was a brilliant feeling.

“I just wanted to keep relaxed and the crowd in the last 200m got me over the line.”

Commentator Brendan Foster said: “That was a brilliant race by Laura Weightman, she picked them off one by one and kept going.

“She will get accolades for that run and she should enjoy it.

“Steve Cram is her coach and he is delighted.

“This is her first Games, and it certainly won’t be her last.”

The semi-finals take place on Wednesday evening at 7.45pm ahead of the final on Friday night.

Fellow Brits Lisa Dobriskey and Hannah England also qualified for the semi-finals, finishing first and fifth respectively in their heats.
