Police are searching for missing 73-year-old Alexander Nicol.

Police are searching for missing 73-year-old Alexander Nicol.

Police searching for missing Newcastle man Alexander Nicol are continuing to focus their search in Alnmouth three weeks after he went missing.

Mr Nicol was last seen on Friday, January 25, just after 4pm, in Alnmouth walking towards the train station.

Someone fitting a similar description was seen walking west on the B1338, near Hipsburn towards the bridge over the river Aln at around 4.25pm on the same day. Subsequent inquiries have not confirmed whether or not the man was Mr Nicol.

Superintendent Paul Orchard, who is leading the search, said: “It has now been three weeks since Mr Nicol was last seen and we are becoming increasingly concerned for him.

“The last confirmed sighting we have of him was in Alnmouth three weeks ago and at the moment we are continuing to focus our search in the area.

“Today, we have had extra resources in Alnmouth and Lesbury. Officers have been carrying out extensive searches of the area using a range of resources to help us establish where he may have gone after he was last seen.”

Mr Nicol was reported missing when he failed to return to his home address in Jesmond on the evening of Friday, January 25, for a prearranged social function. That morning he had got on the x18 bus from the Regent centre in Gosforth destined for Berwick. He got off the bus at Alnmouth.

He was not believed to be in ill health or have any medical conditions when he was last seen.

Mr Nicol is known to frequent libraries and churches and was believed to be in the process of tracing his family history.

Supt Orchard added: “We’re continuing to ask anyone who was in Alnmouth three weeks ago to think back and let us know if they think they saw someone fitting Mr Nicol’s description. No matter how unimportant they might think the information they have may be, it could prove crucial to us in helping to find him.”

Anyone with any information should contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191.
