Pothole cliam scrutinised

A claim that Northumberland County Council is dealing with nearly 700 potholes a week has been met with a dubious response from residents.

At Monday’s north area committee meeting, Coun Scott Dickinson said that the authority was tackling 690 craters a week.

He said that it was down to the ‘register potholes online’ widget on the county council’s website.

Coun Dickinson, ward member for Druridge Bay and the county council’s business chairman, added: “They’re making good progress. The lads out there are doing a great job.”

However, this was scrutinised by members of the public who were present at the meeting. They said they felt that there was a ‘lot of backslapping among the councillors’.

Wooler Parish councillor Alfreda Hindmarsh pointed out the urgent need to deal with a growing pothole in the entrance to the Glendale Surgery at Padgepool Place, Wooler, which is often used by ambulances.

WARNING OVER RURAL BUS CUTS

Further cuts to vital bus services threaten to have a devastating impact on England’s rural communities, the Rural Services Network has warned.

It comes as the county council has launched a consultation on a number of its subsidised services, in the face of a 13 per cent reduction in the budget available in 2014/15.

CELEBRATING THE APPRENTICES

Young people in Northumberland took the top seats in the council chamber as they shared their experiences of being an apprentice during an event at County Hall this week. The event helped the county council celebrate the success of their apprentices as part of National Apprenticeship Week.
