The B6341 over the Lion Bridge in and out of Alnwick will not be closed during the school summer holidays, it has been confirmed.

Signs had gone up suggesting that the bridge was going to be closed for works in the coming weeks, just when the town is full of visitors and tourists.

However, Alnwick’s county councillor, Gordon Castle, has confirmed that there will be no closure before Monday, September 5, when the schools are back. The signs warning of the work have been removed too.

In May, we reported that Northumberland County Council was planning to refurbish the Lion Bridge with work likely to take eight to 10 weeks.

The local authority asked councillors when the work should take place and the clear feeling was that the summer period should be avoided at all cost.
