A new festival is being launched to celebrate the great outdoors.

Activities such as archery and gliding will be on offer during Wooler Outdoor Week (WOW).

Films and talks from popular speakers will also be part of the festival which takes place from Thursday, May 22, to Sunday, May 25.

The event is the brainchild of outdoor specialists Maxine Lock and Karl Wait and is being supported by local businesses.

It has also received a £2,000 grant from the Northumberland National Park Sustainable Development Fund and £500 from Wooler Parish Council.

Maxine, a director of Wooler-based social enterprise, Journey to Self, said: “We would like to encourage locals as well as tourists to try some of the many outdoor activities that are available in this area.

“We believe this beautiful part of the country is up there with the UK’s finest.”

A full committee of local representatives is on board for the festival, which will also include sessions on navigation in the hills.

It is hoped that bushcraft activities will be on offer, plus taster sessions in mountain biking, kayaking, fell running, archery, gliding, hill walking and rock climbing.

The activities are being staged by local outdoor providers. Most are free or low cost. For details and to book go to www.wooleroutdoor week.com
