Plans to build two new stores on an empty site in Alnwick look set to get the green light next week.

An application, by Northumberland Estates, for an Aldi food store and a Majestic Wine outlet on the former Willis of Alnwick site on South Road goes before Northumberland County Council’s north area planning committee next Thursday.

And it was revealed today that planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval, as ‘the proposal would deliver a sustainable form of development on the basis of economic (contributing to economic growth, investment in the town, job creation and regeneration of a vacant site), social (creating local employment opportunities and enhancing retail choice and range within the town) and environmental considerations (enhancement and regeneration of a vacant previously-developed site, use of sustainable construction and efficiency measures, and promotion of sustainable transport)’.

When the plans were unveiled last summer, it was reported that the development would create more than 30 jobs.

But the scheme has attracted three letters of objection from local residents, which raise concerns over additional traffic, and two more citing a lack of need for another discount food store.

Morrisons, Alnwick and District Chamber of Trade and Alnwick Civic Society have also raised concerns.
