New hope for food factory, says Beith

An MP has claimed there is new hope for the future of an Amble factory after its premises were acquired by a new company.

The former Border Laird premises were sold to Tyneside-based Moir Seafoods earlier this month by administrators PwC, appointed after parent company Cumbrian Seafoods went into administration in December 2011.

Lion Capital, which owns Young’s Seafood Limited, had acquired the customer contracts and equipment, but the factory closed in July after a deal to sell the business collapsed. In total up to 80 jobs were lost.

Sir Alan said: “I welcome the news that Moir Seafoods has bought the Border Laird premises in Amble. I understand that plans for the site are at an early stage, but I and my team are in contact with the company and I very much hope that this news will offer a future for the Amble factory and those who worked there. Amble has been through some tough times with the loss of jobs at Northumberland Foods and Border Laird, and I will do everything I can to help encourage businesses to come to the town and create much-needed work.”
