New homes plan, but post office won’t be touched

A scheme to build new homes in a north Northumberland village, which sparked a 400-name petition, is back on the table.

But the plans by the Northumberland Estates for Lesbury have been amended significantly, meaning the under-threat post office will remain.

Northumberland Estates had submitted an application last year to build 20 properties in place of four existing cottages in Lesbury.

The post office would also have been pulled down and replaced with a purpose-built alternative on the new estate.

But the scheme was condemned by residents, while the parish council unanimously objected.

And in September, the scheme was withdrawn following the launch of a petition against the plans.

Now an application has been submitted for eight new homes on land between Down House and Old School House on the village’s Riverside, which will not affect the post office or the four existing cottages.

An existing outbuilding would be the only victim of the new properties, which would all be two-bedroom houses.

In documents accompanying the planning application, it is explained that the ‘new application has taken into consideration the comments received and has been redesigned in such a manner as to retain the main features that have been highlighted as being worthy of retention’.
