A new charity event to raise awareness and cash for local good causes has been launched – and swimmers are being urged to sign up.

Swim for Alnwick is being led by the town’s Lions group and will take place from Monday, May 12, to Saturday, May 17.

The aim of the event is to give small charities and voluntary organisations in Alnwick and District the chance to raise funds for themselves and the Lions.

There will be a number of opportunities for people to swim throughout the week, including a Swimathon at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre on May 17, from 3pm to 9pm.

People can also take part during the week at their own swimming lessons or in the Aqua Zumba session at the leisure centre.

For those who are just learning to swim, there will be Woggle races.

Karen Hirst, from Alnwick-based Northumberland Theatre Company, is helping the Lions to organise the event.

She said: “The idea of the swim is to raise awareness in the area of local organisations needing support; to get the people of Alnwick to have a swim and to raise some money for some good causes, organisations for which this type of fund-raising activity would not normally be possible.”

The Swimathon on May 17 will be limited to 18 teams, who will be allowed an hour each. Entry forms, along with sponsor forms, are available from today at www.alnwicklions.org.uk and once the teams have been announced, people will be able to contact their chosen organisation and arrange to swim for them.

Money raised will be on a 60/40 split to each organisation and the Lions.

Non-swimmers can still be involved and help with the Swimathon.
