A well-respected martial arts instructor is starting a new club in Amble, with the aim of creating a family-friendly
Shaun Gaines is offering separate youth and adult classes in multi-disciplined sports through Amble Long Zhanshi MMA Club.
The courses on offer will include Chinese boxing, wrestling, jujitsu, K1 and others.
The classes, which start later this month, have been arranged thanks to funding from many sources, including Northumberland County Council’s community chest.
Bruce Durham, committee member for the club, said: “We have worked really hard over the past 12 months to secure funding that has allowed us to offer this kind of programme to the local community.
“The need for this type of programme was identified through receiving more than 200 surveys from local children, highlighting an unanswered need for this type of training.
“We have secured a head coach that has many years of experience delivering safe, quality, structured programmes and I feel that many people will come to Shaun’s classes as his reputation speaks volumes.
“We have already received a great deal of interest.”
The club is fully affiliated and insured and will offer a recognised belt-led grading system for youths and adults.
The classes will be open to all and the group is aiming to create a family club-type environment.
Bruce added: “We cater for all and welcome everyone who simply wants to get fit, or for those who also want to try their hand in a competitive bout. The beauty of this club is that we all train alongside each other, which really creates a brilliant environment to train in.”
The training sessions start on Tuesday, June 24, and will run every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter.
Times will be 6pm to 7pm for juniors (10 to 15-year-olds) and 7.15pm to 8.15pm for 16 and above.
The classes will take place at Amble Community Sports Development Centre, formerly the Boys’ Club.
The first session on the Tuesday is free then it is £1 for juniors and £2 per session for adults. Funding means that the classes can be offered at a reduced rate. Anyone attending should bring a pair of boxing gloves and water.
