Musical celebration as Gospels return to the North East

Four concerts on Holy Island taking place later this year will celebrate the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the North East during 2013.

Brought about in collaboration between the Holy Island Partnership, the Holy Island Development Trust and St Mary’s Church, where the events take place, the programme of music will evoke and celebrate the brilliance and creativity of this ancient cultural and spiritual masterpiece.

The first three events will include the world premiere of specially-commissioned new works expressing the beauty, intricacy and wonder of the Gospel pages.

On Saturday, June 29, the island welcomes the internationally-renowned Northumbrian artist Alistair Anderson and his band.

The following month will see Christian Forshaw’s Sanctuary Ensemble perform music which has been described as ‘the heart and the earth and the heavens all united’ on Saturday, July 27.

Two days later, on Monday, July 29, a group which has long-standing connections with Holy Island, the Marygate Singers, performs a concert, which will include new work by John Lewis, a well-known Newcastle musician.

Finally, on Saturday, September 14, Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross for String Quartet, will be performed by members of Northern Sinfonia.

The concerts and the new commissions have been made possible through the generosity of Arts Council England and Northumberland County Council.

The medieval manuscripts go on show in Durham from July 1 to September 30

They will be displayed in Durham University’s Palace Green Library, completely redesigned and refurbished for this event, alongside artefacts wrought from precious metals and minerals including gold, amber and silver and stone sculpture.
