Mum’s cancer battle sparks pupils’ fund-raising efforts
A teenager has been inspired to raise hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity after her mum’s brave fight with the disease.
Olivia Bernstein and her friends were behind a fund-raising day at Rothbury’s Dr Thomlinson Middle School last month.
The 13-year-old’s mother, Margaret, found out she had breast cancer in 2010 but is now on the road to recovery.
February’s money-making event featured a non-uniform day, a range of stalls and a sponsored run around the field.
It collected around £530 for Cancer Research UK.
Olivia had previously held a sponsored silence around a year ago for the same cause.
Margaret, 54, is overwhelmed by the fund-raising efforts.
“I am very proud of Olivia and her friends. What they have done is amazing and a great achievement,” said Margaret.
“They understand the benefits of raising the money for the charity.”
She added: “I also feel that the school needs praising for supporting the pupils in their efforts to raise funds.”
Margaret had her last treatment in February 2012.
During her ordeal, she was supported by HospiceCare North Northumberland, which is the main provider of palliative care in the area and provides day care over two sites, in Alnwick and in Berwick.
Margaret admits the charity played a huge role in helping her through her cancer fight.
“They were absolutely brilliant.
“It is good to have somewhere to go and speak to people in the same situation.
“The staff there are very good.
“HospiceCare helped me a lot through my treatment and helped my family too.”
To give something back to HospiceCare, both Margaret and Olivia, from Rothbury, will be taking part in the charity’s fund-raising fashion show later this month.
The special event, to be held on Friday, March 15, at The Alnwick Garden’s pavilion, will see the hospice’s patients and their families model the latest fashion trends.
Items on show will come from Alnwick-based stores such as CC Fashion, Kiddies Kabin and Scotts of Alnwick, as well as Dorothy Perkins.
Margaret said she is feeling okay about strutting her stuff, but joked: “As long as they can try to make me look a bit more glamorous.” `
There will also be handmade corsets by Sue Scott, while showgoers will be able to browse and shop with The Chocolate Spa, The Emporium, A1 Glass Studio, Studley Soaps and Christina Murton Jewellery.
Tickets, priced £10, are available from CC Fashion, Scotts of Alnwick or from the hospice directly by calling 01665 606515 or by visiting www.hospicecare-nn.org.uk.
The event runs from 7pm to 9.30pm. Refreshments will be provided.
