A terrified mother has said she fears for her family’s safety after being subjected to a constant barrage of racially-motivated abuse.

Amina Uddin, from Alnwick, claims her children have to endure repeated insults about their ethnicity, while her 24-year-old nephew was assaulted in the town on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, one of the family’s shops, the Barresdale Triple Diner, was attacked by mindless yobs.

She has vowed not to be defeated by this disturbing behaviour, but admits that it is taking its toll on the family.

In a frank interview with the Gazette, Amina, who is married to Roy, said: “I thought Alnwick was supposed to be a nice, safe town, but I want people to know that there are some really racially-abusive people here.

“It is not everyone, but there are some individuals who are spoiling everything for us and we don’t know what they are getting out of it. It is not on. All we want to do is feel safe in the town that we love.”

Amina told the Gazette that she is concerned about the impact it is having on her children – 11-year-old twins, 16-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

“I am seriously worried about their safety,” she said.

“I’m scared about my children going to and from school. And they can’t play in the park. Youngsters say to them ‘go back to your own country’ or ‘do you have a visa?’

“But I was born and bred in this country and so were my children.

“I might be a different colour but it doesn’t mean that I am any less English.”

Amina says that her nephew was assaulted on Howling Lane and claims the attacker was racially abusive. She said the police have been informed.

In February, we reported that the Barresdale Triple Diner had been vandalised by masked attackers, who used a wooden plank to smash the eatery’s windows.

Amina believes the raid was racially-motivated and says that louts constantly throw stones and chips at the shop’s windows. She added: “It is constant. There are certain people who aggravate us or give us some kind of racial abuse.”

The family also runs the town’s Mivesi restaurant. Amina believes that racism towards the family has intensified since they took over in 2012, but says there haven’t been problems at the Market Place-based restaurant.

She added: “We won’t be defeated. I want the people of Alnwick to know what is going on in the town and I want to shame those individuals for what they are doing – they know who they are.”
