Liberal Democrat campaigner Julie Pörksen is urging people to sign her petition and get Labour’s plans to charge post-16 students £450 per year for travel to school or college debated by Northumberland County Council.
The petition comes after it was announced that the charge could be made as part of budget savings put forward by the county council.
But concerns have been raised by oppostition parties that the charge will mean some families will be unable to send their children to school.
Julie’s petition has been accepted by the council’s petition scheme and needs 1,500 signatures for full consideration by county councillors. The deadline for the petition is February 10.
Julie said: “I have had a really good response to my campaign from local residents, parents and students – most people are gobsmacked when I tell them Labour are planning to charge over-16s £450 for travelling to their local school or college.
“The school leaving age is rising to 18 so it is even more outrageous to charge students for accessing compulsory school and college.
“We already have 200 signatures and hope that more people from across Northumberland will sign my petition and send a message to the Labour Party that access to education should be a basic right for all our young people.”

A campaign has also been launched by the Northumberland Conservatives.
