A man who was found unconscious with head wounds in a Northumberland street at the weekend was attacked, police have confirmed.

They are now appealing for witnesses to the assault in Front Street, Newbiggin.

The 60-year-old was discovered at around 2.40am yesterday with injuries to his face and head. Following police inquiries, it was established he had been assaulted.

He was taken by ambulance to Wansbeck District General Hospital, then transferred to Newcastle’s RVI, where his injuries are described as serious, but he is in a stable condition.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the man in the area or any suspicious activity in the early hours of the morning. Extra officers are on patrol in the area to provide reassurance to the local community.
