A man accused of causing £815,000 damage to a ferry will have his case heard at crown court.

Boden George Hughes, of Fulwell Road, Sunderland, allegedly set fire to a cabin on board a DFDS Seaways ferry bound for Amsterdam on December 28.

The 26-year-old was at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court today charged with arson being reckless as to causing damage and intending to endanger life.

He is also charged with affray.

No pleas were entered and magistrates sent the case to Newcastle Crown Court, where he will appear on January 14.

Hughes was remanded in custody until then.
