A 26-year-old man has been charged with arson reckless to endangering life and affray following a blaze on the DFDS Seaways ferry from North Shields to Amsterdam on Saturday night.

Boden George Hughes, of Fulwell Road, Sunderland, has been remanded in custody to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates tomorrow, at 10am.

The ferry was forced to return to North Shields in the early hours of yesterday after the fire broke out at about 10.45pm on Saturday, when the ship was 30 miles off the coast of North Yorkshire.

Five crew members and one passenger were airlifted by an RAF helicopter for treatment for smoke inhalation at Scarborough Hospital and later released.

A second man, who is 28 and was arrested for affray, has been bailed pending further inquiries.
