Major housing plans for south of the town
Plans for more than 200 homes in Alnwick, to be sited alongside a sports complex and a potential new high school, will be unveiled to the public next week.
Northumberland Estates has announced proposals for a residential development consisting of around 225 properties – 30 per cent of which would be affordable – at Greensfield, to the south of the town centre.
Local residents are being invited to a public exhibition of the scheme, which will take place next Thursday at Alnwick Cricket Club.
A statement from the Estates this week explained that it is ‘responding to demand for high-quality private and affordable housing in Alnwick’.
The company, which represents the business interests of the Duke of Northumberland, has appointed award-winning architects Ian Darby Partnership and landscape architects Fairhurst to progress the development.
A spokesman said: “This will help to both stimulate economic development in the town and provide affordable homes for young people, larger family housing and accessible homes for the elderly.
“Located alongside existing sporting facilities, the development will be close to a wide range of existing amenities at Willowburn and to the town’s large employers.
“It is well-served by public transport and has easy access to Alnwick town centre and the A1.
“Also, The Northumberland Estates has offered a section of land close to the development as a potential location for the exciting and much-needed proposed rebuild of the Duchess’s High School.”
The target date for the start of construction on a new high school is 2014, with the doors opening in September 2015, following its selection for the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme.
Meanwhile, the £1.5million scheme to transform Alnwick’s sports facilities was approved in March last year.
The site will feature seven football pitches, an all-weather floodlit hockey pitch, four floodlit tennis courts, changing and toilet facilities and car parking.
The public exhibition for the housing proposal takes place at the cricket club, on Weavers Way, on Thursday, March 14, from 4pm to 7pm.
