Lifeboat named after diver

SEAHOUSES' new inshore lifeboat was officially named on Saturday in honour of a West Midlands man who died in a diving accident.

The 30,000 D-class lifeboat is named Peter Downes in memory of the Sutton Coldfield banker who died following the incident in the English Channel in 2002.

Mr Downes' wife Carolyn McLaughlin, who has now remarried, felt something positive should come out of her husband's death and, with the help of Peter's brother Michael, started to raise money for the RNLI. They provided a D-class lifeboat for Pwllheli lifeboat station in Wales and one for Seahouses which was delivered in January.
