Laura Weightman has secured her third major medal of the summer with a committed bronze-medal winning performance in tonight’s 1500m final at the European Championships.
Weightman grabbed her place on the podium by crossing the line in 4:06.32, behind winner Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) in 4:04.18, and second-placed Abeba Aregawi (Sweden) 4:05.08.
Her third-place finish in Zurich, Switzerland, follows a Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow last month, and winning the British Championships, in Birmingham, in June.
The Lesbury athlete, 23, put in a brave performance this evening by going to the front of the pack on the penultimate lap.
She was chased down by pre-final favourites, Hassan and Aregawi at the bell and the pair opened a gap over the Great Britain runner.
But The Morpeth Harrier dug deep and held out for the bronze.
Weightman sealed her spot in the final by coming through her heat in fourth place in 4:10.55 on Tuesday.
