Last chance for Army

Finlay.

Finlay.

Tomorrow is the deadline for nominations for the 2014 Jam Jar Army beneficiary – the fourth year of our successful community campaign.

We have already had a number of worthy local causes nominated, but there is still time to get yours in for the chance to follow in the footsteps of current charity SHAK, for which more than £11,000 has been raised.

Email ben.oconnell@jpress.co.uk or drop your entry off at the Gazette office in Bondgate Without, Alnwick.

This week’s featured dog from SHAK is Finlay, the first dog to arrive there this year.

The charity’s founder, Stephen Wylie, said: “Picked up as a stray, Finlay, as we have named him, was in appalling condition and he weighed just 14kgs on arrival and that included the fleas the size of greenflies on his body.

“I’m delighted to say Sheena and Roger have come to the help of another sighthound when he so desperately needed it and after a week of TLC, his weight is already improving and up to 16kgs.

“He is also beginning to stand taller now, rather than slouching, and he is beginning to look as if he is actually alive.

“Finlay is now safe and in the best hands, but I wonder how long it is till we have to try and heal the next emaciated greyhound or lurcher.

“I think the saddest thing about all this is that none of the SHAK team was shocked either by his condition or the fact that he was even in this state. We have seen it all so many times before.

“Surely it has to be time that something is done at government level about this kind of terrible abuse?”
