A new company, which has developed from existing tuition for children and young people and a Saturday Polish School, is being launched tomorrow.

This is a specialised service providing help in schools to the many children and young people who have recently come into the country and whose first language is not English.

The launch, tomorrow at 10.15am in Berwick’s Guildhall, is being attended by Sir Alan Beith MP, the Mayor and Mayoress and the Polish Consul.

The service, which gives individual tuition in English as an Additional Language (EAL), has been working with pupils in a number of schools in Alnwick, Berwick and Blyth.

Thanks to grants from sources including Northumberland County Council and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, these services are set to expand to assist children from Russian-speaking backgrounds.

The service is led by Dr Beata Kohlbek, who has studied languages at the universities of Düsseldorf and Glasgow.

The name of the company – Mohr Language Support – has been inspired by a German teacher who encouraged Dr Kohlbek to specialise in languages and fits in well with a pun, phonetically, for the valuable service that is needed.

The new social enterprise is currently providing support to 20 children and young people from a migrant background. The funding will allow for continuous language support for these young people over a number of years.

All schools are welcome to contact the service, especially if they have new arrivals who do not speak English.

Mohr Language Support currently employs two EAL tutors, two Polish teachers and a teaching assistant.

The board of directors is made up of four highly experienced and committed consultants who are helping the new company to grow into a sustainable not-for-profit organisation.
