Kiwi's claim to Duke's title

THE Duke of Northumberland is facing an extraordinary challenge – for his hereditary title.

Kevin Percy, a New Zealand antiques dealer, has asked for support from the Queen to exhume the body of Alan Percy, brother of the 5th Earl of Northumberland, who died in 1560, to see if his DNA matches his own as he believes he could be an heir to the estate.

The 74-year-old has spent years working with genealogists to research his family history and gather evidence to support his claim that the New Zealand Percys have been denied rights to the Northumberland dynasty.

He also wants to exhume the body of Francis Percy Jnr, the great grandson of Thomas Percy the gunpowder plotter.

The current Duke of Northumberland said: "It is not unusual to hear such claims as they crop up every few years."
