Keep safe when in the hills

A north Northumberland walks company is offering skills session to ensure hikers are prepared when venturing into the hills or countryside.

This year, Shepherds Walks are running a number of courses to help improve the knowledge and expertise of walkers ranging from basic map and compass navigational courses to a two-day outdoor first aid course which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Jon Monks, from the company, said: “We have put a number of new courses in place this year aimed at the independent walker, or the person who walks regularly with friends.

“We put our own guides and volunteers through many of these courses so for 2013 we thought we should also offer them to the general public.”

All the staff tutoring the new couses are also active members of the Mountain Rescue team, so they have great expertise to pass on to the participants.
