An inaugural fund-raising event in aid of local good causes begins next week and people are being encouraged to take part.

Alnwick Lions is behind the first Swim for Alnwick, which starts this Monday and runs until Saturday, May 17, at the town’s Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre.

The aim of the event is to raise funds for Alnwick and district charities and voluntary organisations, as well as the Lions. All money raised will be on a 60/40 split to each organisation and the Lions.

It is up to people to choose who they support for the event.

They can do it in their swimming lessons during the week, Aqua Zumba on Tuesday or swim at the Swimathon on the Saturday between 3pm and 9pm.

People are being encouraged to get a sponsor form and email organisers which good cause you are swimming for. A slot will need to be arranged. The Swim for Alnwick is suitable for all levels of ability.

Karen Hirst, from Northumberland Theatre Company (NTC), is helping the Lions to organise the event and will be swimming herself. She says she is a little nervous as she is going to be swimming at least 50 lengths, but NTC urgently needs a new sound desk for its 2014/15 shows.

Sponsor forms can be collected from both the Lions Bookshop, in the town’s Bondgate Within, and Northumberland Theatre Company’s office in Alnwick Playhouse, on Bondgate Without.

Alternatively, visit the Lions’ website, www.alnwick lions.org.uk or email Tom Deedigan at webbmaster@alnwicklions.org.uk

Swimming instructions are on the Lions’ website.

Karen added: “Come and raise some money while doing yourself some good.”
