Motorists are being advised to take care if driving tonight as the Met Office issues an ice warning.
The yellow warning, less serious than orange or red, states that ‘a band of rain will cross Scotland and Northern Ireland during this evening and overnight with the chance of some temporary snow over some of the higher routes. After the clearance of the rain, temperatures will fall away sharply with widespread ice forming. The public are advised to be aware of this wintry hazard’.
Northumberland and the other local authorities in the North East – Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland – are likely to be affected too, according to the warning.
