The Old Boat House has been named as one of two North East restaurants fighting to be crowned the best coastal fish eaterie in the country.

Both the Boat House and Longlands Fish Kitchen, in Tynemouth, have received the nod in the Coast Fish Restaurant of the Year category in the Fishing News Awards shortlist, which is open to public vote. Last month, the Amble venue won the Fine Dining Award at our Northumberland WOW247 honours.

Celebrity chef and awards host Simon Rimmer, co-presenter of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, said: “It’s no secret that the North East of England has long been a real hub for some of the world’s best seafood, so it’s not surprising to see these nominations for an award.

“The dedication shown by everyone in the seafood industry in the North East to maintain such a consistent, high-quality product is certainly worthy of recognition and I’m delighted I’ll get to play a part in celebrating these achievements.”

Resurrected after an eight-year absence, the Fishing News Awards celebrate the men and women who work long hours, often in extremely difficult conditions, to put healthy and sustainable food on our tables.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Aberdeen on Thursday, May 26, the evening before the Aberdeen Fishing Expo.

Fishing remains one of the UK’s most challenging occupations, with almost 12,000 fishermen still setting out to catch the 756,000 tonnes of seafood landed by British vessels each year.

David Linkie, editor of Fishing News, which is running the awards, said: “Fishing is a way of life, often continuing through the generations, but the daily risks that our fishermen face should never be underestimated. Knowing they are providing the best quality fish and seafood is reward in itself, but we feel that they deserve further recognition. This is precisely why Fishing News is hosting these awards; to celebrate the endeavour, determination and gritty commitment of those involved in the UK’s fishing industry over the past year.”
