Hob-bit of a Gazette scoop

Edlingham Castle

Edlingham Castle

A story which ran in last week’s Gazette, revealing how part of Northumberland has been used in the poster for the upcoming Hobbit film, has gone global.

The view from Corby Crag, overlooking Edlingham Castle, features in the promo image for Peter Jackson’s eagerly-awaited first installment of the Tolkien classic, due for release this December.

The connection was made by eagle-eyed Gazette reader Phil Murray, from Rothbury, who was astonished to recognise the castle and railway viaduct in the background.

And the tale has since been picked up by national media in New Zealand – where the film was shot – as well as daily newspapers here in the UK, all of which have credited the Gazette in their own articles.

The Kiwi titles have shown particular interest, since a massive $65million advertising campaign to promote Tolkien fan-based tourism in New Zealand carried the slogan ‘100 per cent Middle Earth, 100 per cent Pure New Zealand’.

Referring to the Gazette story, the Wellington-based Dominion Post referred to the poster as ‘pure British scenery’, calling it an ‘unexpected detour’. The Telegraph, meanwhile, stated: “Northumberland has mysteriously replaced New Zealand as Middle Earth.”

The story has also appeared on a large number of websites, including MSN and IMDb.
