A local hotel has made it through to the final shortlist of the Northumbria in Bloom competition.

The White Swan in Alnwick is competing for the Whitley Bay Guardian Trophy in the contest, which will be held on September 11 at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.

It will be judged on the choice of plants, colour schemes, coordination, condition of the plants; the use of colour and its relationship to the building and the surrounding area; originality, colour combinations, structural planting; and upkeep.

Paul Smith, general manager of the White Swan, said: “The façade of any hotel is the first welcome visitors receive, and at the White Swan we take particular care in maintaining it.

“Alnwick is one of the most picturesque market towns in the country and we are glad to be doing our bit to contribute to its beauty.”

Last year, 76 communities entered the contest.
