Three friends from Longframlington are preparing to take part in the Great North Run – disguised as their favourite superheroes.

David Hogg, Stephen Stubbs and Tom Pugh, who live together in supported housing for people with learning disabilities, are taking part in the half marathon next month to raise money for children’s cancer charity KidsCan.

It is not the first time the trio have donned unusual outfits to raise money for good causes.

They have taken part in the Great North Run twice before, and last year they pulled out all the stops with their costumes.

“We were all dressed as pirates,” said Stephen, 36, who will wear an Incredible Hulk costume for this year’s race.

“We chose the superhero theme,” he added.

David, 28, said that he loves the buzz of being in the Great North Run, alongside more than 50,000 other runners.

The boys will use wheelchairs to complete the 13.1-mile course, and will be helped along by willing volunteers.

Veronica Darrie, one of their carers at the house in Longframlington, said the three have spent a lot of effort making plans for the race, and raising money.

“They just love doing the Great North Run – it was originally just a one-off thing, but they’ve elected to do it every year,” she said.

“They’re very motivated and just keen to raise as much money for Kidscan as they can. They’re looking forward to the event – it’s a big day for them.”

They each need to raise more than £300 in sponsorship money, which will go towards KidsCan’s work supporting research into children’s cancer.

They have also been busy helping to organise fund-raising events. A family fun day held in Alnwick over the weekend raised £446, all of which will go to Kidscan.

This year’s Great North Run – the second-biggest half marathon in the world – takes place on September 16. More than 54,000 people are expected to take part.
