Recruits are still needed to help strip and clear a house, as part of a massive community makeover in support of a brave three-year-old boy with a rare medical condition.

The Gazette has teamed up with Alnwick-based MKM Building Supplies to launch the Aid For Aidan campaign.

The DIY SOS-themed initiative aims to dramatically transform the property that the parents of Aidan Jackowiak Smith are set to purchase.

The youngster has Cloves Syndrome, with swelling to his face and neck, and the house at Fire Station Cottages, which is in a poor state of repair, needs to be totally refurbished to cater for his specific needs.

This includes creating a sensory garden, widening doors for wheelchair access and installing a lift from the dining room to Aidan’s bedroom.

As part of the campaign, we need recruits to come forward and help strip and clear the house, prior to work starting.

These volunteer sessions – called Aidan Days – will include removing carpets, wallpaper and the kitchen units. They will run at the house from this Thursday to Sunday, from 9am.

We have had offers of help, but need more volunteers. To lend your services, contact James Willoughby on 01665 602234, prior to turning up to the house.
