A Northumberland vicar has been honoured for his life-saving generosity after making his 75th blood donation in 45 years.

Canon Jim Robertson, from Alnwick, was recognised by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) at a recent awards ceremony.

The 65-year-old clergyman, who is the vicar of Whittingham and Edlingham with Bolton Chapel, was presented with a commemorative crystal plate to mark his achievements during a ceremony at Beamish Hall Hotel in County Durham.

Each blood donation can help save the lives of up to three others. Having given 75 donations, Canon Robertson could have helped save 225 lives.

Donna Batty, on behalf of NHSBT, said: “It’s wonderful that we can call on people like our donors who have dedicated themselves to giving blood over so many years, performing a life-saving role for no reward, other than the knowledge that they are helping others.

“However, every year many existing donors in our region have to stop giving blood due to factors like ill-health and medication.”

She added: “So in order to maintain blood stocks, we constantly need new donors.”

Canon Robertson started donating blood because of ‘student enthusiasm’.

And now he hopes to encourage others to donate.

He said: “It does not hurt and it makes such a difference to other peoples’ lives.”
