Eleven hardy members completed the Three Peaks Challenge – climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in less than 24 hours – earlier this month.

The group’s efforts were in honour of brave Northumberland farmer Stu Ridley, who lost his five-month battle with an inoperable brain tumour in July.

They will split the funds between The Brain Tumour Charity and the Great North Air Ambulance Service – and they have smashed their £2,000 target.

The group, who had a team of four drivers, climbed Ben Nevis in five-and-a-half hours, Scafell Pike in four hours – which they started in the dark at 4am – and Snowdon in four hours. Alnwick Young Farmers’ secretary Jess Straker said: “It was a challenge and it was by no means easy, but we powered on as a team and became stronger friends throughout the trip.

“There was 1.5metres of snow on the top of Ben Nevis which we had to walk through for about 1km, but we had clear views at each of the three summits. Standing on top of Ben Nevis has to be one of the best feelings in the world.”

Thanks have been given to all of the sponsors, including Tustain Motors, which donated a car for the trip. The main sponsors were Doxford Barns; Morwick Ice Cream; Alnorthumbria Vets; Lycetts; Wooler Mart; Redem; MSP; Coastal Grains; Anstead Farm Cotages; Henry Prytherch Pluming; Pumphreys Coffee; and Northumbrian Quality Feeds.
