Hard-working volunteers get their just rewards
Alnwick Civic Award winners with Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
ALNWICK’S unsung heroes have been recognised in the first awards ceremony of its kind.
Alnwick Town Council gave out 11 gongs at its Civic Awards last week.
They were set up to celebrate and recognise a wide range of voluntary work by a number of special individuals and groups.
The awards were divided into two categories, the civic youth and the wider general awards.
James Brown took one youth award for his help and support over the last five years to the Alnwick Playhouse. Alnwick Youth Forum took the other for their representation of young people and their work on local democracy and participation.
In the main civic awards category, Kathleen Bradford, Susan Frater, Barbara Reid and Paul Toward received awards for the voluntary work they do with numerous organisations in the town.
Husband and wife team, Neil and Joyce Brison, received an award for their hard work over many years coordinating the Poppy Appeal for Alnwick and the surrounding areas and for their work with the Royal British Legion.
Two awards were made to volunteers from the world of sport. The first was to Terry Owen-Smith for his services to Alnwick Rugby Club over the last 50 years.
The second went to Gavin Turnbull for his work at Alnwick Cricket Club.
Two awards were made to groups of volunteers. The first was to the Alnwick Stroke Club volunteers.
The second was to the Bailiffgate Museum volunteers.
Mayor Alan Symmonds, who presented the awards, said: “I feel it is extremely important that the town acknowledges and gives formal recognition to our unsung heroes who in the most part quietly get on with their activities and contributions, and in doing so, make an enormous difference to the lives of many others.”
“I am delighted that we have been able to give formal recognition to all our award winners . Their involvement, dedication and contribution to the community has been immense.”
The award winners will be invited to the closing ceremony of the Festival of Alnwick, in the Alnwick Garden on Friday, June 15, to receive a special Festival of Alnwick medal.
