Hairy Lemon calls time on trading
LAST orders have been called at an Alnwick pub, which has closed its doors for the final time.
The Hairy Lemon, in Narrowgate, announced on Tuesday that its owners, Lahdar Leisure, had ceased trading at the premises.
A statement on Facebook said: “As many of you have already heard, the powers-that-be (the company that owns the Hairy Lemon) have closed the Lemon for trading. The Lemon crew would like to thank all our customers old and new for their custom over the years.”
The pub controversially changed its named from the Black Swan in 2001, sparking a petition from Alnwick Town Council against it.
Alnwick Coun Gordon Castle said: “Obviously, it is very sad when a business closes and people lose jobs. But when there is over-capacity, as there seems to be in pubs in Alnwick, competition means trade will be taken up by other businesses.
“I know there are a few local jobs that will be lost. And I’m sure there will be one or two wondering if the name will change back.”
The pub is for sale with Christie and Co.
The landlords and pub company Lahdar Leisure were unavailable for comment.
