Groom Rik Dyson proved to his wedding party that he is a cut above the rest – by having a surprise head shave during his reception.
The 39-year-old carried out the deed in aid of HospiceCare North Northumberland and raised more than £2,000 for the cause.
Rik, whose family live in north Northumberland, wanted to support the palliative-care charity because of the service it provides in the community.
The decision to shave off his locks came as a complete shock to his guests at the wedding in Devon.
His wife-to-be, Emma, knew beforehand, although the announcement left her horrified – at least at first.
Raffle tickets were sold at the reception and the holders of the two winning tickets shaved his head.
Rik said: “There were gasps when I made the announcement and some guests even offered money for me not to shave it off.
“Emma knew what I wanted to do before we got married. She was horrified.
“But she was delighted when she found out it was for such a worthy cause.”
The charity is the main provider of palliative care in north Northumberland, delivering care and support to adults who have life-limiting illnesses and other conditions, and their families and carers.
Julie Frost, from HospiceCare, said: “What Rik has done is tremendous and incredibly brave.
“He clearly has some wonderfully supportive family and friends. The money will go to supporting people within our community and we are grateful for his generous donation.”
